CD490 Insulator Pendant
Up to this point, the collection of lamps has somewhat of a personal attachment in that of their uniqueness and bespoke design.
The venture of our coming designs focuses on simplicity and creation of some limited-edition lamps.
As we explored many different designs, we started to come across the use of vintage glass telegraph pole insulators. Unknowingly, this would also be a catalyst to a side interest in collecting insulators.
Vintage glass Insulators
As we explored many different designs, we started to come across the use of vintage glass telegraph pole insulators. Unknowingly, this would also be a catalyst to a side interest in collecting insulators.
Most insulators have a designation to identify their make, moulds and manufacturer.
For our first series of Insulator pendants, we use the CD490 Glass that was manufactured in Australia by the Australian Glass Manufacturing (AGM) company around the 1940s.
The purple colouring of the glass is due to a process of solarisation of glass, where the manganese dioxide (which ironically is was used by glassmakers in the 19th century as a decolouriser in making clear glass).
Over time, a photochemical reaction with the manganese ions causes the glass to turn different hues of purple. Commonly, the purple colouring of the glass is referred to as Amethyst Glass.
The CD490 was first lit on 11 April 2017.
